COURSE OVERVIEW

The course provides simulated real-life scenarios for a set of skills to provide advanced first aid, oxygen therapy, advanced resuscitation, ongoing monitoring and care after treatment, handover of the casualty to emergency services and incident debriefing or evaluation to improve future operations, address individual needs recognising psychological impacts and seeking help as required.

Participants learn to develop and maintain first aid action plans in consultation with relevant parties, undertake a risk assessment to establish, maintain and facilitate the provision of appropriate first aid in a workplace environment, follow manufacturer’s instructions and complete documentation including checklists for stocking and maintaining equipment such as resuscitation and oxygen equipment and first aid kits.

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. 

APPLICATION

he Occupational First Aid Skill Set provides a higher level of training with additional competencies for individuals responsible for delivering first aid in workplace environments. This advanced course equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond effectively to a wide range of workplace injuries and medical emergencies. It is designed for those working in industries such as construction, manufacturing, hospitality, education, retail, and office settings, where quick, competent responses to incidents are essential.

In addition to completing the Provide First Aid course, this skill set includes more advanced competencies, enabling participants to manage complex medical situations, perform CPR and advanced life support, and handle a variety of workplace injuries with confidence. The training ensures that individuals are capable of providing immediate, high-quality care and supporting injured or ill persons until professional medical assistance arrives.

OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID SKILL SET (UPDATE/REFRESHER)

The Occupational First Aid Skill Set is required to be updated/refreshed every three years. 

In order for all First Aid Skill Sets to be current, a current CPR must be held/valid. 

Those who need to renew or have expired first aid qualifications can enrol into any course.

The course will cover various aspects of rescue situations and determine appropriate rescue actions, communicate effectively, and use a range of equipment and techniques to conduct complex open water rescues efficiently. Complex water rescues involve multiple people in distress, individuals suffering from medical events while in the water including suspected spinal injuries, injured persons, navigating through various hazards, or a combination of many factors.

In this CPR course, you will learn these skills, in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, including using an automated external defibrillator (AED), how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions, and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits.

This course provides practical simulated real-life situations to learn and gain the confidence to coordinate and manage a response and provide advanced first aid in line with legal, community and workplace considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies until emergency services arrive.

In this course individuals who may be required to provide emergency care to a casualty with suspected spinal injury. It includes recognition and management of a suspected spinal injury, immobilising cervical spine using manual in-line stabilisation (MILS) techniques as well as spinal equipment, evaluating the need to move a casualty, preparing a casualty for transport, transporting and monitoring.

The Surf Park Lifeguard Training Program is a specialised training module specific to surf parks and wave machines. The program is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to ensure the safety and well-being of users consisting of surfers, swimmers and other watercraft users. Learning content includes surf awareness skills, wave controls, supervision methods, aquatic rescue techniques, preventive measures, emergency response, first aid, logistics and operations.

The Aquatic Amusement Lifeguard Training Program offers further training modules specific to aquatic based theme/amusement parks. The program is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to ensure the safety of visitors capturing wave pools, water slides, lazy rivers, wave machines, inflatable obstacles, and other water-based amusements. Learning content includes supervision methods, aquatic rescue techniques, preventive measures, emergency response, first aid and amusement/ride operations.

The Aquatic Attraction Training Program (AATP) is suited for shallow water or aquatic based amusement/devices/rides such as splash playgrounds/pads, water coasters etc. The program equips staff to monitor the general safety of others and take proactive measures to reduce risk where lifeguard skills may not be appropriate. Learning content includes health and safety, preventive measures, crowd control, risk management, communication and ride/device operator awareness.

This course will teach participants the skills and knowledge needed to complete a hazard analysis, specify risk controls to bring risks to ALARP, identify relevant personnel, complete appropriate hazard analysis forms (paper or electronic), monitor and review effectiveness of risk controls.

Participants will also learn the significance of the analysis context, how the identified hazards may cause harm and the purpose and use of the risk matrix.

This course will also equip individuals with the skills and knowledge required to advise on appropriate emergency planning, making them familiar with all aspects of building fire safety on day-to-day matters and during facility emergencies. The course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard 3745 and Australian Standard 4083.
