COURSE SET - FIRE SAFETY ADVISOR

REDUCING RISK IN WORKPLACES

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course has been developed for individuals who wish to work or who are appointed in the role of Fire Safety Adviser (FSA). It will provide individuals with the relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities required to become an FSA in accordance with the Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008. This course meets the registration requirements in QLD with QFES for a Fire Safety Advisor.

This course will also equip individuals with the skills and knowledge required to advise on appropriate emergency planning, making them familiar with all aspects of building fire safety on day-to-day matters and during facility emergencies.

A Fire Safety Advisor is required in all high occupancy buildings listed in the Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008. (High occupancy is classified as: 30 or more employees; a Class 2 or 3 building that is more than 25m in height; or a Class 4 building or an at-risk premise, as nominated by the Commissioner of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services).

The course has been developed to cover a broad range of emergencies and facilities as considered in Australian Standard 3745 and Australian Standard 4083. It applies to employees in the workplace within all industries and in all contexts within Queensland.

Participants in this course will also learn how to effectively:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of an FSA

  • Understand legislation relating to fire safety

  • Identify fire safety installations and equipment in a building

  • Develop an awareness of maintenance and records relating to fire safety

  • Develop risk management strategies

  • Implement emergency planning processes

  • Conduct and evaluate evacuation exercises and fire drills

  • Operate emergency protection and emergency control equipment

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

INDIVIDUAL FIRE SAFETY UNIT DELIVERY

Our Fire Safety Training program offers a flexible approach, allowing you to complete individual units or combine them to build a comprehensive skill set tailored to your role and responsibilities.

 

The available units include:

  • PUAFER001 - Identify, Prevent and Report Potential Facility Emergency Situations: Gain the skills to identify and assess potential fire hazards within a facility, prevent emergencies, and report risks to prevent escalation.

  • PUAFER002 - Ensure Facility Emergency Prevention Procedures, Systems, and Processes are Implemented: Focus on implementing strategies and systems that reduce the likelihood of emergencies, ensuring all preventative measures are properly followed.

  • PUAFER003 - Manage and Monitor Facility Emergency Procedures, Equipment, and Other Resources: Learn to manage emergency procedures, monitor equipment, and ensure other critical resources are available and functional in the event of an emergency.

  • PUAFER004 - Respond to Facility Emergencies: Acquire the skills to respond to emergencies, including fires, in a calm and controlled manner, minimising risk to life and property.

  • PUAFER005 - Operate as Part of an Emergency Control Organisation: Understand how to effectively function within an emergency control team, ensuring coordination and communication during emergency situations.

  • PUAFER006 - Lead an Emergency Control Organisation: Learn leadership techniques to oversee an emergency control organisation, ensuring the team responds effectively during a crisis.

  • PUAFER007 - Manage an Emergency Control Organisation: Develop the ability to lead and manage an emergency control team, ensuring swift, organised, and effective responses to any facility emergency.

  • PUAFER008 - Confine Small Emergencies in a Facility: Learn how to handle and contain small-scale emergencies before they escalate into more significant hazards, ensuring minimal disruption.

These units can be delivered individually for specific competencies or combined to provide a broader understanding of fire safety management and emergency response. Whether you're a safety officer, team leader, or emergency response personnel, our training is designed to ensure you're well-prepared for any fire or emergency situation in your workplace.

The course will cover various aspects of rescue situations and determine appropriate rescue actions, communicate effectively, and use a range of equipment and techniques to conduct complex open water rescues efficiently. Complex water rescues involve multiple people in distress, individuals suffering from medical events while in the water including suspected spinal injuries, injured persons, navigating through various hazards, or a combination of many factors.

The Surf Park Lifeguard Training Program is a specialised training module specific to surf parks and wave machines. The program is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to ensure the safety and well-being of users consisting of surfers, swimmers and other watercraft users. Learning content includes surf awareness skills, wave controls, supervision methods, aquatic rescue techniques, preventive measures, emergency response, first aid, logistics and operations.

In this CPR course, you will learn these skills, in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, including using an automated external defibrillator (AED), how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions, and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits.

The Aquatic Amusement Lifeguard Training Program offers further training modules specific to aquatic based theme/amusement parks. The program is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to ensure the safety of visitors capturing wave pools, water slides, lazy rivers, wave machines, inflatable obstacles, and other water-based amusements. Learning content includes supervision methods, aquatic rescue techniques, preventive measures, emergency response, first aid and amusement/ride operations.

This course provides practical simulated real-life situations to learn and gain the confidence to coordinate and manage a response and provide advanced first aid in line with legal, community and workplace considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies until emergency services arrive.

The Aquatic Attraction Training Program (AATP) is suited for shallow water or aquatic based amusement/devices/rides such as splash playgrounds/pads, water coasters etc. The program equips staff to monitor the general safety of others and take proactive measures to reduce risk where lifeguard skills may not be appropriate. Learning content includes health and safety, preventive measures, crowd control, risk management, communication and ride/device operator awareness.

The course provides simulated real-life scenarios for a set of skills to provide advanced first aid, oxygen therapy, advanced resuscitation, ongoing monitoring and care after treatment, handover of the casualty to emergency services and incident debriefing or evaluation to improve future operations, address individual needs recognising psychological impacts and seeking help as required.

This course will teach participants the skills and knowledge needed to complete a hazard analysis, specify risk controls to bring risks to ALARP, identify relevant personnel, complete appropriate hazard analysis forms (paper or electronic), monitor and review effectiveness of risk controls.

Participants will also learn the significance of the analysis context, how the identified hazards may cause harm and the purpose and use of the risk matrix.

In this course individuals who may be required to provide emergency care to a casualty with suspected spinal injury. It includes recognition and management of a suspected spinal injury, immobilising cervical spine using manual in-line stabilisation (MILS) techniques as well as spinal equipment, evaluating the need to move a casualty, preparing a casualty for transport, transporting and monitoring.
