Course Information
If you work in a job role which provides services to children and young people, including in community services and health contexts, and which carries a duty of care responsibility within legislative and policy frameworks, then this course is for you.
Participants in this course will learn the skills and knowledge required to support and protect children and young people who are at risk of harm. It focuses not only on identifying the signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect, but also supports child-focused practices to uphold the rights of the child, disclosure, reporting and confidentiality in accordance with state legislative responsibilities and the service policies and procedures.
Participants will also learn how to apply ethical and nurturing practices and observe professional boundaries when working with children and young people.
The skills in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
Entry Requirements
Participants must have significant communication skills, be able to read and understand forms and to make accurate reports and the ability to record details of children and young people at risk and to make reports using handwritten skills and computer skills.
Participants will need to be either currently employed in the childcare sector or be able to find a workplace which will allow you to volunteer your time to perform the tasks and be willing to provide a third party observer to witness your demonstrations and to complete a third party report form.
Please note: A smart phone or camera attached to a computer or tablet to video completing the practical assessment part of the Online Course will be required.

Course Duration
Online – Self paced (minimum of 8 hours) includes online learning and theory assessment, and observation of practical tasks at a real workplace by a third party.
Assessment Requirements
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both theory and practical assessment tasks.
Practical scenarios and tasks to be demonstrated in a workplace:

In relation to a scenario provided, or a real life situation:

Support the protection of a child or young person

Employ child-focused work practices to uphold the rights of children and young people

Maintain confidentiality

Provide appropriate responses

Documentation:

Locate Policies and Procedures in the workplace

Complete a written incident report form
-
Complete a Third Party Report form (student and a person observing the student in the workplace)
Theory assessment - An exam consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
Please note that all case studies within this course are fictional. As a wide variety of job descriptions and workplace environments exist, case studies may not always cover all types of possible scenarios encountered within your job role or scope of work. However, these case studies should allow you to apply your decision making and duty of care responsibility across the board, when recognising and responding to children and young people at risk.
